Beyond the Rainbow (Documentary) (Kosovo)

Having no clue what life was like for gay people in the former Yugoslavia region, I felt a real sense of curiosity when I found this documentary. By providing a platform for Kosovo's homosexual community to discuss their experiences and the discrimination they encounter, the film incorporates perspectives from everyday citizens, psychologists, analysts, and religious leaders. Released in 2007, the film is nearly 19 years old; while circumstances may have evolved, the documentary's core objective was to examine the brutal realities of gay life in Kosovo and question how much longer individuals must remain hidden, living in fear of their own identities.Much of the film focuses on four gay men who sit on stools, their identities protected by being silhouetted in shadow, as they discuss their hopes, fears, feelings, and the humiliations they have endured. A bisexual man and a lesbian are also featured. Much of the narrative is actually conveyed between the lines—seen in how these individuals make excuses for the treatment they receive, how they explain themselves using terms that gay people in western countries would never even think to use, and how some use the label of bisexuality as a smokescreen for both themselves and others. The film also brings in other voices, such as religious figures and social workers. In direct contrast to the views of the religious spokesmen, one lesbian speaks with great clarity and power about her situation, stating that heaven and hell exist right here on earth.
