The plot of this indie art film centers on a young gay man navigating a series of sexual encounters throughout Hong Kong. Rather than focusing on the sex, the interest lies in the surrounding context: the long, wandering dialogues between him and his partners that range from occasionally clichéd to quite profound, touching on life and their place in the world. Much like the protagonist, most of the men he encounters are transplants in the sprawling city, finding one another through a mobile app. With very little plot beyond this, it feels as though the director is utilizing a single man's hookup cycle as a lens to examine intimacy and isolation within this fragmented community of men.
The protagonist is a gay, single man in his twenties who feels restless regarding his life's direction and is in a near-constant state of arousal. The film follows his journey from one encounter to the next, ensuring each feels unique. Interestingly, he seems to reinvent himself with every new partner, adopting traits from his recent lovers to craft the persona he presents to the next person. His journey includes an Iranian biologist, an architect whose boyfriend is a kink-oriented flight attendant, a Thai bartender working sex work to avoid returning home, a brief encounter with a delivery guy, and time spent with an older man visibly paralyzed by the grief of losing a partner. He eventually reunites with the aforementioned flight attendant and concludes with a Black dancer. Regardless of the partner, the dialogue consistently returns to themes of ambition, loss, and the struggle to navigate life, creating a quiet thread of commonality among these diverse men. Yet, beneath the surface, he lacks inner peace, and we see him weeping in solitude more than once after his guests depart.
Utilizing striking black and white cinematography that lends the film a dreamlike quality, the production is visually stunning and quite open about its sexual content, though it occasionally feels a bit too muted and claustrophobic. Ultimately, the film portrays the loneliness many gay men experience while navigating hookup apps. The protagonist's partners represent a vast spectrum of lives—wealthy or broke, secure or grieving, and hailing from American, Chinese, Thai, British, and Iranian backgrounds. While each meeting is distinct, they all seem to revolve around a shared desire for connection devoid of traditional relationship pressures. The film is unflinching in its depiction of hookup mechanics, giving poppers, lingerie, and sex toys as much screen time as tender moments like post-coital cuddling; nearly every sexual encounter is followed by a long, drifting conversation. For the lead, these moments serve multiple purposes: casual contact, an escape from his own instability, and perhaps fleeting glimpses of genuine connection. However, a profound sense of isolation remains, evidenced by quiet scenes of him dancing alone or using a toy, perpetually chasing intimacy with strangers. Ultimately, the film serves as a compelling, if somewhat repetitive, exploration of what links gay men of all backgrounds once the apps and hookups are removed, revealing a core of loneliness and transient moments that never quite coalesce into something more.(6/10)
