Stay by My Side After the Rain Review: A Gentle Japanese BL About Coming Out, Family, and Growing Together

Stay by My Side After the Rain is a modest series, but its sincerity gives it an appeal that louder romances often miss. Rather than leaning on sensational twists or extreme angst, it stays focused on emotional honesty, family pressure, and the quiet relief of finding someone who still knows you after years of silence.

The story follows Kanade and Mashiro, childhood friends who drifted apart after Kanade ran from his hometown without ever confessing what he felt. Their reunion brings all of that unfinished emotion back to the surface. What could have become a typical second-chance romance instead turns into something more grounded: a story about finally saying the truth out loud and dealing with what comes next.

One of the show’s strengths is its emotional gentleness. The romance grows through conversation, shared history, and the awkwardness of two people trying to rebuild trust after time and fear have done their damage. The series treats coming out not as a one-scene event, but as part of a longer process involving family, self-image, and the courage to stop hiding.

Kanade is the more compelling half of the pair because the writing gives his hesitation real texture. You can feel how deeply shame and expectation shaped him, which makes his gradual openness satisfying to watch. Mashiro is written more simply, but his steadiness gives the relationship its emotional anchor. Together they make the romance feel comforting rather than melodramatic.

The downside is that the pacing can be extremely soft. Twelve short episodes is not a major commitment, yet the show still takes time to find its strongest emotional rhythm. Some viewers may wish it reached its deeper material earlier, and a few family scenes feel more functional than fully nuanced.

Even with those limits, the series has a sweetness that is hard to dismiss. It understands the value of mutual care, of small gestures, and of letting characters actually talk to each other instead of manufacturing endless chaos. That alone makes it more refreshing than many genre entries built only on tension and delay.

In the end, Stay by My Side After the Rain is a tender Japanese BL about honesty, companionship, and emotional repair. It is not flashy, but it has enough heart to make its softness feel earned rather than slight.
